I cant really tell in the photo, but I have to assume that he modded the 4002 with a badass bridge.??

I'll take the 4002, the 4001, and the Wal, please. Actually, I'll take everything there. Plus his white 4001. And his red Wal.

I've seen a similar pic like this, and I'm gonna say this is inside Geddy's house in his home studio.

I'd kill for that Wal! Nice collection he's got there.. where's his tear drop P bass?

Ok couple of questions. Did he use his stereo tear drop P bass for By-Tor on "All The Worlds A Stage?" and did he use his jazz for YYZ of "Exit... Stage Left"?

Also... does anyone here think the 4001 permanently changed his playing style? I saw an OLD pic of him playing his P bass (before the mods) with Rush (John Rutsey on the drums). His hand was directly over the pick up. When you see him play the 4001 he plays over the neck pup (most of the time.). When he plays his jazz now he plays closer to the neck, not over the neck pup.. like the 4001 pup should be there. When he moves his hand back, be plays between the pups.. like the 4001 bridge pup should be there.

Hmmm, good observation.

I saw them alot in the '70s, for whatever reason, they toured the Dayton OH area frequently, I saw them 12 times, met them in a Holiday Inn lobby once, Geddy signed my "Circus" magazine, stood there and read his interview that was in the mag, pretty cool, every time I saw them play By-Tor, he used his Ricks. The last time I saw them live, Ged was into Steinbergers, bummer,,,, his tone was very thin and "farty". I think he was into very light guage strings at the time.

I could never figure out why he would want to try to improve on his tone when he had it, dead cold.

His tone on ESL was amazing! Best Rick tone IMO. His J bass doesn't sound right on the songs he recorded with a Rick. "Free Will?" "The Trees". Kinda lame. I do love his tone on "Different Stages" though. It fit him great for the new stuff he was playing.

I've tried his one finger strum (A la Animate) and it doesn't sound right on my 4001. I need to bypass that cap.

Yes.

As far as what p/up he plays over during years of the 4001, it really depended on what he was doing. Mind you his basses had the bridge p/up cover removed, and he would play over that when digging into a song like the solo in 'Freewill'.

Yeah that's what I do. Over the neck pup til the solo. But if you watch "Red Barchetta" he's anchored over the neck pup pretty much the entire song. I play most of the time over the neck pup, except when doing a solo or playing YYZ.. heh.

He still sticks to the same areas on his J bass now.I n front of the neck pup for rhythm work and between the pups for solo's.
