This is advertised as a 1977 "Midnight Blue," but that's too early for Midnight Blue. This appears to be a dark Azureglo in great condition:

John Minutaglio (sp?) had a '77 4005 at the SoCalCon that was this dark Azureglo, too. Niiiiice!

I like that color! It should look awesome under stage lights.

Hmmm, nice. I look forward to the day that I can get another azure; unfortunately I don't think it'll be this one.

The pickguard is an aftermarket part (look at the weird knobs placement). Why would anyone replace the pickguard on a near-mint guitar? "... you'd be hard-pressed to find a mark on it" - could it be a refin?

[...John Minutaglio...]

I've wanted to make this observation for awhile now (hopefully no offense will be taken): am I the *only* one whose eyes automatically see his last name as Minute-glo for a split second? Image

I'll stick my neck out and say Azureglos sound best!!!! (let the debate begin...)I was lucky enough to play the Marquee club a fortnight ago, and ex Sex Pistol Glen Matlock joined us on stage, and then signed my Azureglo 4001 for me!!! Y'see, even black felt tip pen looks good on azureglo...

Simon, not sure whether they sound best (my '76 was a bit so-so), but they're certainly my favourite colour....just wish there was a way of getting that 72 (or was it 73?) with all the collectable features off you! My dream Rick....

Ilan, good point, could be a refin especially as it looks a little darker that standard.

I've bid 500 UKP on it a couple of days ago but in the light of what you think I may not go for it. I always thought that Azureglo was very consistant as it's not a 'see through' finish....?

I remarked to John Hall about the dark blue of John Minutaglio's 4005 Azrureglo, and JH indicated that some Azureglos were darker than others. As I recall, JM's was also a '77, but I don't have my photo paperwork in front of me. It could be that there was a time when the color mix for Azureglo was darker than "usual." That doesn't necessarily mean that the bass in question is a refin, but it means it might not be. Anyway, it's a pretty instrument.

"... and JH indicated that some Azureglos were darker than others"

That's good news, but if I was going to bid on this bass, I'd ask the seller why was the pickguard replaced, and ask for control cavity pics. Just to be on the safe side.
