What do you think of the McGuinn 12-string video?

I just ordered this video. I thought it would help me out with a few of the Byrd's tunes.
How would you guys rate this video?

I have two celebrity "instructional" videos: the McGuinn one and the Setzer one. I didn't really expect to learn anything from either and maybe thats why I didn't? Roger's is an interesting insight to his approach to twelve string playing care and feeding. I never played the banjo, don't use thumb-picks and don't plan to start. I guess if you repeatedly played it and were intent on learning from it you would get something out of it. I liked it for what I bought it for - just to hear him explain stuff.

Your take on the McGuinn video is pretty much like mine.I'm glad I hae it, but in truth, all the previous 30 some years I've spent listening
with headphones on endless replay has me doing
disgustingly accurate takes on all the essential Byrd licks.I suppose if I had the banjo/fingerpicking thing as well, that might be icing on the cake, but you really don't need it.

Don,
I just bought a Rick 12 and I've been letting one of the guitarists in my band play it, since he used to play a lot of 12 with some kinda folk band. He tells me he is trying to work out the McGuinn stuff with banjo picks, which is the way he played an acoustic 12 in his old folk band. But is this absolutely necessary? Will I be able to play all those licks from :"Turn Turn Turn", "Eight Miles High, and "Bells Of Rhythmny" with just a flatpick?

Yes.When I first saw the Byrds in early 1970, I was up Very close to McGuinn, and he did Not have Any fingerpicks during the show.And 4 years later, when I met him in person, all he was using was a Herco Gold pick.

Thanks for the info Don. Now if I can just get my guitar back from my bandmate!!! I think I created a monster here. I loan it to him for a few weeks to play and before I know it he wants to keep it all the time!

The biggest asset to the McGuinn videos, in my opinion, is the written tablature that comes with the tapes. Sure, seeing him play is an eye-opener, and I also enjoy watching him break a string or have trouble stringing the RIC (He is human too), but being able to play like he plays without having to just use my ear (on a 12 it is tough) is great. Worth every penny for that alone.

Ive never seen the video... but I just received my tickets for RMs show in Cleveland November 8th. Fifth row, smack in the center. Cant wait!

I saw him maybe 10 years ago (Back from Rio) That was THE concert of my lifetime. A very small crowd ranging from college age to 60 year olds standing together and singing along... unforgettable!

This time, I will have a pickguard in my pocket for sure
