I just bought the one on e-bay for 999.00 . And i just wanted some opinions buy ricky players on the set neck s basses . Thanks all

Theres never been a 4003 set neck, only a 4001.4003s was a neck through body,the seventy's early eighty's 4001s was a set neck.

this is an 81 so its a 4001 .

I have an '84 4001SLH set-neck, had it about 10 years now, gig with it about 10 times a month. It's great and the Ric bass I play the most. That being said, there are many here who will tell you that my bass, and all others like it, are absolute ****. Go figure.

Why would people say a 4001s is ****? Set-necks sound quite good.

"S" only means "special". The very few set neck basses made were generally all Model 4000 single pickup basses but a few were made and many converted in the field to be two pickup units.

So the 4001 with deluxe features is the standard model and the 'budget' -fill in a better word- is the special version?

Doesn't routing weaken the neck joint? I once thought of doing this to my 4000, but was afraid to try. Now I wouldn't consider it at all. It's really a wonderful instrument to play & hear as is.

You could say... but today they're far more desirable, probably cause' they look so much better.

still my question goes unanswered lol . what do you all think of them ? Tone , Feel ,Playability ? What do you think of the set neck ? I have an old Hamer cruise bass from the 80's with a set neck . And it sounds killer with rip van winkle like sustain .
