So you say that most 4001 s where one pickup ? What were the production # of the two pickup model ? How would i know if mine was truly a two pickup model ? And when you say in the field you mean private luthiers or hack artists made them Two pickup models ?

Huh? 4001's are two pickup basses. But many 4000's have been modified by their owners to have two pickups which, more or less, makes them like a 4001S.

I can tell mine's factory from the handwriting in the neck p/u cavity.

'In the field' probably means privateer efforts that made some 4000 basses into 4001-S models, but I doubt if JH was the one who put it that way...
Due to the rarity of the model, many believe that some of the 60's-era 4001-S basses (NOT the RM1999 basses) were merely 4000 basses that had a neck p/up plus the addl. wiring added at the factory before shipment to the customer, renamed model 4000/1/S. I suppose it would have been easy enough to do from a manufacturing standpoint.

About 1984 JH made me, on special order, a 4001S (4003s?) White with a white pickguard. Nice looking bass but the neck was way more 4003 (clubby) than my 1975 4001. It looked great but played like a P-Bass. Sold it. JH: remember, I sent it back 'cause the headstock began to separate from the fretboard? You repaired it at no charge to me (thank-you) but it never was as good as my old '75. You had the cat's-*** with RM1999! Just make them again! It's not Brain Surgery! We want what we want!(With respect...)'Oh yeah, thanks much for the factory tour at about the same time. I've got Pics somewhere... REISSUE THE RM1999 JUST LIKE YOU MADE THEM IN THE '60'S, PLEASE.
