Variety picks The Beatles as "Icon of the Century"

"NEW YORK - Sorry Johnny, Oprah and Madonna _ you just missed the cut. Variety ranks the top 10 entertainment icons of the century in a new commemorative issue marking the trade publication's 100th anniversary. The Beatles were dubbed the no. 1 icon in the issue, currently on newsstands.
Following the Fab Four, the top 10 is rounded out by Louis Armstrong, Lucille Ball, Humphrey Bogart, Marlon Brando, Charlie Chaplin, James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Mickey Mouse and Elvis Presley.
Variety also lists 90 more icons, though not ranked. It includes Frank Sinatra, Cary Grant, Bob Dylan, the Marx Brothers, Johnny Carson, Oprah Winfrey, Madonna and others.
Bugs Bunny did not make Variety's list, but Pac Man did. The most contemporary choices were Kurt Cobain, Tupac Shakur and Quentin Tarantino.
The lone animal named an icon? Lassie, much to Alf's dismay."

Tarantino! HAHAHAHAHAH! I love that guy! The "everybody dies" endings in his movies makes me watch every one.
And it's cool The Beatles made no. 1.

Good for the Fabs. But its odd that Elvis is slipping. The babes were always nuts for the man. But then again he pretty had it all. The looks, the moves, and the voice.

yup, Elvis blazed the trail....
Great natural singer and entertainer... had that certain magical something that you either have or dont.
(BTW... his guitar playing sucked and was just for image. He might as well have been strumming a tofu burger for all the difference it made sound-wise)

How could you go past the most influential group of songwriters of that century?
Kent, that radio Ad is for a radio station here in Melbourne,how did you come by that?I think the balcony shot is either Melbourne or Sydney as well! Can you enlighten?

I was just surfin around for a Beatle pix that would likely be new to the folks here. I do that a lot and have tons of Beatle pix saved. Yes, those pix are from their 1964 Australia tour... Its the balcony of the Sheraton Park Hotel, Sydney. See:

haaaa... yup, you got that right. What would Elvis be doing today?.... likely he'd be the King of Las Vegas living atop some hotel and doing the occasiohnal sentimental (and very well attended) show.

No he would have joined the Traveling Wilburys in the '80's.
He would have gotten re-hipped, I think.

By now he'd be 65 and "re-hipped" might mean hip replacement surgury.
Dunno... I cant quite picture John in the Traveling Wilburys. I suspect that one of the things that George liked about it was that it didn't contain any other former Beatles.

oh... hmmmm... Elvis as a Wilbury? Interesting, but I agree, probably no way either of them would have been.
Elvis Costello maybe, but not Elvis the Pelvis.

I heard Del Shannon was slated to replace Roy Orbison, before Del took his own life.
