I was checking this out, ( I want one bad, but not left handed ), and I noticed the TRC. This looks to be a "vintage"???, black plexi one. Are they all like this ? or are they a lefty thing?

I'd kill for that... if it was a righty. I like that pickup placement better than the other kind. Wow.. I need to get me one of those.

I tried a toaster in the neck position but for the bridge pickup use a high gain or the hb1 ... also these basses are good wired up volume, volume, tone like a jazz bass ... then you can blend the pickups ...

it is cool that music 123 has the Laredo basses ... but why don't any of the big online retailers sell 4004CII basses?

Dammit! I hate it when that happens! $42.00 a month? I can afford that!

So I go there to look at this bass, and I look at the reviews. Anyone care to guess who wrote THIS review? Image I left off the name and state so you could guess. Image

Musical experience: Working musician
Style of music: many styles

The 4004L is a really nice bass. It is a little different than the 4001/4003. It has humbucking pickups. It does not sound good through little cheap amps. But through a bigger more powerful amp it kicks ... it is a good bass for recording. It doesn't have as much treble bite as the 4003, but it has a nice growl and mid punch. Nice smooth neck and sleek body. It is a little lighter than the 4003. It does not have the obsolete bridge mute or the stereo sound that the 4003 has. Overall I like my 4003 a little better, but this bass is a close second.

What're the standard pickup positions for the 4004L? Are the pups closer to the neck? Or are they moved back a little bit? I prefer the latter. That would affect my buying one. If it had the space I'm for it. If not I'll pass and wait for one that has the space.

Can I fit a high gain in there? If so I'd switch them both to high gains instead of toasters. I'd want it to sound like my 4001 or a 4003... just without the pick guard and giant hole in the front of the bass.

Before I know RIC didn't have a custom shop I was thinking about getting a bass like a 4004 and adding a third pup. sure that would screw the resell, but I doubt I'd ever sell it. That would be my perfect bass... a Rickenbacker bass with three pups. Of course I do alot of thinking and not enough acting, so I doubt I'd ever add a third pup to a bass.

The TRC does look a little different from my Laredo, but mine being RH may be the difference.

I've never played/seen an older 4004 with the PU right near the neck, so I can't say I like or dislike the sound. My guess is that those older 4004's have a little more bassy sound. I probably would deal with it actually playing...I tend not to be bothered by different features and neck shapes...as long as it's only 4 strings. Image

I was just hoping I wouldn't get the pickup right next to the neck. I just got comfortable playing with the 1" spacing. No spacing would just mess me up.

Jeff, your 4-2-5 jetglo Laredo.. could you post a pic please? I don't want to go on there and steal the pic.
