Actually, laws should prevent me from even being allowed to play with stuff like this. I don't have the knowledge or the tools to even know if it works.
All I did was take the pickup that was in my 4000 project, remove the cover, and added magnetic shoes. There was a magnet under the pickup that I placed under the shoes, but over the plastic base.
I'll bring it to the Mid-Atlantic Confluence so you guys can fool around with it if you want.

Make may find that you have to reverse the polarity of the coil. The magnetic field of the shoes is very different from the understring type magnets. Ihave made 3 pickups like that and they work perfectly. The sound is very close to the old ones. Nice job Marc!

So are the shoes magnetic or cosmetic?

Very nice! What exactly do the horseshoes pickups sound like in comparison to the regular pickups? I know this will be a subjective answer... But I've never heard a horseshoe and find them so intriguing!

Ted... thanks for the compliment.
Jeff..shoes are magnetic
Ken... they are the ones you sent me
David..The magnetic horseshoe has a very warm sound. For me the problem with the old ones was the output. Coupling the magnetic shoes with either the higain or the reissue pickup gives it a much more powerful version of the old sound.
Not for everyone's tastes but, for me it's perfection.

Damn, did I make a mess of that post. I was typing quickly this morning on my way out the door. I meant to say that you may want to connect the wires up backwards otherwise the pickup will sound out of phase.

I know Ted, horseshoe pickups get us excited.
Ironically, right now, I don't have a bass to hook it up to. Makes me want to start another project.
