The opening bid is $1399.99 and from the photos. it needs new knobs and a pickguard. I suspect there's more damage (nicks, chips) and asked for more photos. If the bidding stays low and the rest of it checks out, I may consider it as a gigging bass. Does anyone know something about this bass that I should know?

Yeesh - looks like it's got some water damage or something up on the headstock. I think the seller's 'four star, very good condition' rating might be a little optimistic...

Looks like some dufus stepped on it! NOT very good condition.

If you look at the closeup of the headstock, there's some funny business on the southside of the first fret - as though the laquer is chipped or something. I wonder what happened to this poor bass!

At least the seller could have polished up the shiny parts...

Oh now that I've seen a closeup of the headstock, I don't think it's water damage after all, just the grain of the maple.

This bass appears to have been partially crushed. The way the pickguard is cracked seems to suggest that it was [sat on, stepped on, in a car trunk during an accident, you name it]. The white area at the G string end of the first fret could be just normal finish delamination. A lot of unbound Ricks have this going on to some degree at the fret ends. Granted, most don't show quite as much as this one does but it is still possible.

Appears to be Musician's Friend, probably a freight damaged unit.

Almost looks like a small crack at the high side of the neck at the first fret.

I would ask to see pics of the back - if it got a bad knock there might be signs of cracking or separating where the neck joins the wings.

I asked for additional pics and the seller said that it was already packed away. I'm going to pass on it since I'm getting more suspicious.

If one was going to sell it why not at least replace the pickguard? Maybe another phony auction? The price seems pretty high for a damaged bass.
