I converted 2 high gain pickups to toaster look a likes ...

I pulled the iron mushroom top slugs and replaced one with alnico magnet slugs and one with steel rods ... they are 11k ohm high gain pickups with a toaster cover ...

Where did you buy the Alinco's? I saw them in Stewart-Mac, but am unsure of the length - do you know offhand?
Going to try this one myself.

I dismantle various jazz bass pickups and cut the rods/magnets down to length ... I will make a few more of these ... and people seem to like the look and sound ...

you can do it yourself with a screw driver, a drill, a dermmel tool, and a small vice ...

There can be problems when cutting already charged magnets as far as messing with the magnetized charge by the act of cutting or drilling. I can't remember the specifics but it was posted on the Ampage pickup forum awhile back. I wonder, despite the good sound you are getting from them if the magnetic charge in those rods might be getting messed up?

The base magnet is doing 90% of the work ... and if the alnico rods do degauss then the base magnet will recharge them ... but I am experimenting with steel rods and alinico rods in the pickup ... the only trick with the alnico rods is don't put them in backwards ...

I was wondering why you were leaving the ceramic magnet in there...now I know why.
