Pickguard question on '81 4003

Hi, I just got a new '81 fireglow 4003 ric. Its my first Ric bass and i absoulty love it, it plays like a dream.

Well, the bass i got has a differnt kind of pick guard than every other rick i have ever seen, it is two peices instead of one so that the pots can be removed with out removing the neck pickup and vice versa. I am wondering if this is something custom a previous owner did or something that Ric does. It is a very professional job, the cut is nice and beveled and an extra screw or two excatly like the other pickguard screws have been added. Who ever did it knew what they were doing and did a good job of it.

The arly 4003 models (like the one you have) have the truss rod adjustments at the body, not the headstock. That's the reason for the two-piece pickguard. They were like this from'79-'84, at which time the truss rods were made adjustable at the headstock again.
