Okay. So Im bassically (haha BASS-ically) just starting pick. So the Chip man (my teacher) says its time for some Yes. I was like sounds good to me. Then I heard it. I got my work cut out for me. At least he didnt pick one of the harder of the songs he played for me. But I was thinking of pick in the wrong light. Pick just always seemed like a lame way to play until well tonight! Thats just crazy. I think Ill have a pick on me for awhile now.

If you want to learn picking there are a few good master teachers to study ...

1 - John Entwistle ... The who Live at Leeds ... masterful picking and awesome tone ...

2 - Paul McCartney ... he is a master of the thud thud flatwound sound ... listen to Silly love songs ...

3 - Chris Squire ... Squire, a pick and a Ric ... that is music to my ears ... listen to Fragile ...

4 - Roger Waters ... One of these Days from Live at Pompei ...

5 - Roy Wood ... he is a guitarist who also plays bass ... listen to Until your mamma's gone ...

Roundabout is very difficult to learn as CS plays it. After you get it down, try singing his part while playing. That is really tough!

Yeah. Im not really worried about it. I should work on my pick more. The harder the better! As long as I can pull it off. I can play with a pick. Its just I always played the same style thigns i would with my fingers. Never gave it much thought. And never learned a pick song really. But hearing the way this guy plays. Really makes you wana learn. It just screwed up everything i thought i knew about playing with a pick.

I agree with Rath. Paul and Roger.. wow... Rog is good for the octaves.. listen to "Careful With That Axe, Eugene". Also the entire 'Animals' album has great picking playing. Dave plays bass on "Pigs (Three Different Ones)" and that songs is great.

Silly Love Songs is very busy. But "Time To Hide" is also very busy. I prefer the latter.

I still need to get my Yes Cd's to me here in NZ, so I'm working on playing some more Floyd til it gets here.

I'm not very familiar with the other two's picking.

"Time To Hide" is classic Paul. I love playing that one.

Yeah, for Squire's best bass-playing, listen especially to "The Yes Album", "Fragile", "Close to the Edge", the song "Ritual" from "Tales . . .", everything off of "Relayer" (that's all CRAZY too . . . try "Sound Chaser" if you dare . . .), and "Drama". "Going for the One" is less of a bass-centric album, though it is quite good (it's more focused on guitar and keys), but it's not the cream of Chris Squire's bass playing.

My personal Squire favorite is "Siberian Khatru" . . . that's like one of the top 10 bass lines ever!

"long distance runaround" is my new favorite yes song to play. its just a "fun" sounding song

"Time to Hide" is one of my favorite Pauly basslines. Good busy song. His bass playing is best when he's not singing. Nothing wrong with his singing though.

starship trooper I feel is one of CS best ! The use of effects and just his flat out bitchin playing is outstanding

I really like Roger Glover's playing, which is all pick as far as I know. Especially on Machine Head. Nothing as technical as Chris Squire, but some of that stuff grooves! My favorites are "Space Truckin'", "Maybe I'm a Leo," and "Never Before"...

Yeah , Your right !Roger is a Very overlooked and underated player.

Sound Chaser... whew! That's one freaked out tune!

I like to screw around on the 6/4 part at the end, the little funky jam off of an F7. Can easily add slap to that line, and move it to different keys and have a little "Rhapsody on Sound Chaser"

Roger Glover is a superb bass player. He is so underated and barely ever gets a mention when it comes to great players. I am no Purple fan at all but what a band that was (original lineup) from a musicianship point of view. No weak link there !
