Amplfier Question

Please excuse me if this post is anywhere "off" the topic of Rickenbackers. (I play my 330 through this amp, so there's the RIC connection!)

Ever since I got my 1955(?) Premier 120 combo amp, I've always wondered what the metal "grill" or "vent" that's positioned at an angle behind the speaker in the cabinet. Sorry, I don't have pictures to show you, but if anyone knows about what this does, I'd like to know. The tech who repaired it didn't even have the slightest clue of what it was.
