It's not a Ric bass, but it sure is sweet.
Fender 64 NOS RB Classic Custom Shop J bass.
Number 7 of 10.
By far the best Fender J bass I have every played. Awesome quarter sawed neck, ash body, and light. Just under 9lbs.
From my understanding Rich Briere had a triad made of 10 J basses, 10 Strats, and 10 Telecasters. For some reason most ended up in Germany. I think Will Lee may have one of the basses.
I probably would have more Fender basses if Fender would put the same kind of attention to detail, and quality construction, and finish as RIC does.
To get a decent Fender, I had to pay twice the price as a 4003.

That is indeed a beauty, Bob.
Nice Rickenbacker FG on it, too!

Thanks Paul.
I agree with you on the Fireglow similarity.
That's what caught my eye initially.
Fender calls it Sienna Sunburst.

What was the original purpose of the pickup covers? Do they actually affect the sound at all? I choose to keep the treble higain cover on my 4001, and I don't notice any difference, so I'm thinking covers are just for looks. Does your Fender have string mutes under the bridge cover, Bob? If so, how well do they work?

The early Js had ugly(IMO)string mutes and a ground strip from the bridge p/u to the bridge under that cover. I think it was just to mask all that. When I first got my 70s J I went straight from the store to the gig, left the covers on 'cause they looked so cool, but they were seriously in my way as at the time I mostly picked back by the bridge. On the break I removed the bridge cover. Nowadays they would be OK but I do like to palm mute some.

Bob, You the Man! That is one cool looking bass. I love '64 jazz as well but got to be honest... I like the 4001 better! You can compare and decide for yourself next week.

Looking forward to it Ron.
Bob, no it does not have string mutes under the cover, but it does have the ground strip like Ronn said.

Bob, Are you bringing any instruments to Portland next week? Would love to see the jazz up close and personal! Here is a shot of my fortunate find from last year. It's got a great story that goes with it. A guy offered it to me along with a '63 EB3 as a "by the way" when I bought my 60's B15 from him!!

Bob, I have a 2005 Fender calendar with a pic of that surfboard bass in it! Nice to know they are actually available and not just 'concept' pieces. Super nice!
