That is a great example. Funny, I found the same bass on a Japanese site too....He bought it in the UK if I remember correctly.
That is a very original bass, which has a serial number DK a few away from Gerry's. Even looks to have the original TRC screws. That fretboard which looks like Brazilian Rosewood is much darker than both mine too....

Andy, I think the fretboard has been stripped on that bass, or has no finish left on it. I'd bet it's had a coat or two of fretboard oil or something similar along the way...

I corresponded with Bob when his web site first went up and he's a very nice guy. He was kind enough to send me a pic and the s/n of his bass. It's 3 away from mine but the Japanese site Andy mentions also claims the same s/n. They aren't the same bass and I think someone is misreading a digit somewhere along the line. Maybe a 3 for an 8. I know Bob went to a lot of trouble to find a 4001S.
I think you're correct Lefty. The fretboard looks just like the Aug 64 I just sold and that was stripped to bare wood.

Yup, could see the dots there on the neck without the lacquer covering them.
Still a much darker fretboard than mine though. The later 64,s with the DK serial numbers do seem darker overall.

I like how he refers to Sir Paul as "His Lordship".
