All the resources I've looked at are a bit old--when exactly did Ric stop making the 4003s5 and 4003s8? The sources I've seen say they were still in production in 1999.

I have a 2001 4003s8

They were discontinued very close to the time the new 4004CII/5 was released.

I think 2001 was the last year for those basses.

the last orders were placed December 2000 and several were made in 2001 to complete those orders ... if my memory is correct ...

I found a 4003S/8 in a store here in Japan back around December 2003. They had already been discontinued in the US by that point, but were still listed in the Japanese catalog and still in stores, though they were taken out of the next catalog. So my guess is that they were definitely done by 2002, though they were still available in Japan at that time. This doesn't mean they were still producing them at that time though.

I never did buy that one. Street price was about 2000 USD. At one point around the beginning of the next year I went in to look at it but it was gone...

Proving my point, if you want it, get it then, because, more than likely, it will not be there when you realize your mistake and go back. Happened to me WAY too many times...if you walk out without it, be sure you can live without it and don't look back.

You are right Steve, happened to me way too many times also.

Just like at my local GC a few years ago, there were 2 4001V63's hanging on the wall. Pondering which one I'd like, and also if my pocket book would allow, they were both gone on my next visit. Both were sold to one person, who couldn't make up his mind on which one was his favorite! Man, I wish I could buy two at a time!

I'm sure most of us realize that after those two sold, I have never seen another Rickenbacker bass or guitar on their wall since. Hmmm. I wonder why?

I've been to that GC... never saw a Rick ever. Plenty of Fenders, the occasional Musicman or OLP bass.. Ibanez... that's about it.

Why does Guitar Center never carry anything good, basswise? The *only* good bass I've ever seen at a guitar center (barring your typical American J-basses) was a Pedulla Rapture V. I must've played every bass in the store . . . even the Warwick Thumbs they had, which felt, sounded, and looked like ****. The only things I liked were the Pedulla and a MusicMan Sterling, but I couldn't get more than one tone out of the Sterling.

I think GC is the reason why EVERY band today plays a Fender, MusicMan, or Warwick. Those seem to be the most popular brands in popular music. Ibanez, I guess, but not so much anymore.

Th Riverside GC had a C64 MG for $1650.

Around $1995 depending on the dealer. The C64S bass goes around $2195. I've got mine on order from Mike Parks.
