One of our brethren has passed away. Link Wray influenced a lot of famous guitarists.

Woah I really didn't know.

Sad to hear that news, and to think there's probably so many people out there who's never heard of Link Wray.

Check out his recordings if you haven't, it's worth a listen.

I was fascinated to learn this: When recording "Rumble," he created the fuzz tone by punching holes in his amplifiers to produce a dark, grumbling sound.

I wonder what he used to punch the holes?

David,

I was always lead to believe that he punched holes in his speakers with a screwdriver.

A great guitarist! I saw him doing rockabilly in the 70s. Didn't think he was that old.

Plug in your guitar, turn the amp up to 10, and let a big vicious D ring out.

Godspeed Link.

Mike wrote "A great guitarist! I saw him doing rockabilly in the 70s. Didn't think he was that old."

He was playing 'Billy with Robert Gordon way back. I think he might have played on Gordon's version of Springsteen's "Fire" - I had an album "Robert Gordon with Link Wray" and I'm pretty sure "Fire" was on it.

I've always heard that he used a razor to cut slits in his speakers initially. I'm sure he used what ever was laying around at the time.

I can't believe he's not in the Hall of Fame.

Hall of Fame, for sure..... I'm embarrassed to say that I never became aware of him until Pulp Fiction came out.... just another example of the fact that he never got the credit he deserved.
