R.I.P Chris Whitley

A criminally overlooked guitarist/singer songwriter. If you know who he is - I'm sure you realize what a tremendous loss this is. If you aren't familiar with his work, you should seek it out.
A sad, sad day.

Chris: Thanks for reminding me of Chris Whitley. A unique artist who has a style and sound of his own but reminds me of Hendrix in many ways. His lyrics are most interesting and certainly reflect a journey through life that has seen heartache.
His site chronicles his recording, performances and life. It is bittersweet in many ways as one listens to his last performances and recordings that are associated, in part, with his departure. The photos of his recording sessions and his rather weak voice speak to his genuineness, bravery and dedication to his work.
While his music was not my style at first, it does have many endearing qualities and his highly creative and emotive. I am glad I took the time to visit his site which is very giving with regard to his music.

Thanks Chris. I did, and I'm now sad that I didn't discover him sooner.
He has that pain in his voice that Jeff Buckley had... just totally different.

His later stuff shows the ravages of his illness. At one time he could sing like a bird. These records are HIGHLY recommended:
1. Dirt Floor
2. Living With The Law
3. Live At Martyrs
Dirt Floor & Live At Martyrs are simply him & his national steel. Living With The Law was produced by Malcolm Burn & Daniel Lanois. For a taste of him with a full band grab Din Of Ecstasy or Terra Incognita (probably for 2 bucks in your local used record store). Not all of his fans like the band stuff but I really do. Dougie Bowne was one hell of a bassist too.
I'm telling you - Dirt Floor will change your life.
