This looks weird, no walnut wings (small sized wings) , two piece laminated neck, wood that isn't very attractive, horseshoe magnets not even aligned ... is this the true prototype like the seller claims it to be?

Some of the early re-issue horseshoes didn't line up.
Actually, some 60's ones didn't either.

Maybe this one's a B series with mods....

That one belongs to fellow forum member Bob Atherton.

Don't do it, Bob!

It is, yeah... 4001/3SB.

Fine example.

I'd contemplate selling it, too.

I like the character in the wood. NIce bass, I don't think I'd want to sell it.

If Bobs, selling its due to something bigger and better I certainly understand.

We went around on this one a few months ago, and I think it was concluded that it was a prototype and is pictured in some literature. I thought he would hang onto this one...good luck Bob! Image

That is not a B series bass.

Judging by the wood grain it IS indeed that one in the Rick-book. But the shoes were aligned properly at that picture.

I checked the B series and they had 1" spacing and no shoes apparently, so it shouldn't be one.

The B series also had the Shedua strip down the neck, among other things that made it a B series.

I don't believe I've ever seen a B series bass

That is not a B series bass.

Then what else can it be?

It has 70s horns/baby headstock..NOS horseshoe, yet 2-piece maple-thru neck? - Hallmarks of an SB....

Hm, has mono jack I see... odd one.

It's either an SB for sure, or an undecidedly rare something-else...

Don't forget it has THREE dots opposed to two on the V63 series at the 19th Fret Image

... which indicates production standard S-series board.

What we should remember is that the B series
was in some was Ricks testing the water....
The bass here has the wood of the B, with the hardware
of the V. If it's all stock, it could be a sort of transitional
piece. The Bs were still available in early 84.
I thought that the 4001SB was mono.....
One thing that is a bit quirky is that none of the Bs I ever
looked at had neck throughs; they were set necks....
But again, that late in the game, who knows.....

Henny,I just wanted to correct you on the use of NOS[new, old, stock]

If you walked into a Chevy dealer and found a 1957 Chevy that was never sold thats NOS,once its been owned[or used by someone ]it is no longer brand new and therefor not NOS.Re-issue is the word your looking for.
