Ric colors

Post by billikenn »

Im new to Rics and already want another one, but am kinda lost as to colors.
Am I correct in saying Desert Gold was from a year ago? (2001)
and is Burgandy only going to offered until 2003? More curious as to the burgandy. I would like to get a 660/12 in burgandy but will not have teh money until late spring...

You're right about the colors, Josh. As for the Burgundyglo 660, you could order one on layaway.
Put $100 down now to ensure you're order goes through; you might have a 3 - 5 month wait anyway.
Or you could wait until Spring and try here:

Mike is very nice to deal with.
Best of luck.

Cool idea, anybody have an idea as to what dealer cost on a 660/12 is?
I found out that the Dakota is about $540.00, so I was willing to pay 6-which I did.

Now when you say burgandyGLO, does that infer that it is a translucent burst? It seems to just be trans finish from what I have seen, and I dont really care for bursts.

As I understand it, the 2002 Burgandy color, while a dark, rich burgandy, does still allow wood grain to show through. It is not a "full" color like the Turquoise or Jetglo or Midnight Blue.

For more ideas of dealer cost, maybe e-mail Chris at Pick of The Ricks (http://www.pickofthericks.com) or Mike Parks at the website Noel has listed above)

Two ideas about two different questions:

(1) although production of burgundy Ric's will end with the close of 2002, I'd imagine that there will be some 2002-built guitars out there in Ric dealer-land for a few months thereafter; there may even be some 2002's built but not yet shipped for a while after the close of the year. Perhaps you can glom onto one of those. I'd still think that the best way to be sure you get a new burgundy 660/12, though, is to swallow hard, then put down a deposit and order one now...; and

(2)It's pretty common for the wholesale price of an item to be set at 50% of the suggested retail price. I don't know that RIC abides by that common practice, but it IS a common practice.

ca. 1965 approx., Rickenbacker made at least several dozen model 420 guitars for the Contello accordian company (these were real 420's, not glue-ons like the Electros). They were finished in a very striking shaded blue, not unlike the red fireglo, but blue. There was also a 365WB hanging in the showroom finished in the exact same color. I asked F. C. at the time, if I wanted a guitar in that color, what would I ask for? He said "natural grain light blue".

Louie Marino (The Vandells) had a 610 in the other blue color now reffered to as 'blue boy'. He had the cresting wave horn shaved down to resemble a 310 style (not at the factory!). I often wonder if that is the guitar now owned by Mike Campbell, refinished black and pickup added???

On the topic as well: Who remembers a guitar shop in Orange, CA called 'The Orange Guitar'? It was located at the corner of Main & LaVeta in a strip mall that has long since been torn down. In a glass case as you entered the building displayed a 360WB finished in what I'll call natural grain orange. Just like fireglo, but orange. A beautiful guitar which was tagged 'not for sale'.

So, what ever happened to these guitars? The green twelve string that shows up in all the books was in the Ric showroom at the time as well. Haven't heard much discussion about Contello guitars on the forum at all. I once had a Contello that was a jetglo 450. Unusual thing about it was that the bridge saddles were like the 4001 bass saddles only smaller. I think Brian Carman's jetglo 610 has the same setup. Very unusual.

So, let's talk about colors! Got anything radically different?

Tracy, the Contellos sound neat...I wonder where they are today??

I hasn't been too long ago that John Williams posted some pictures of a 1970 or 71 381 that was a custom-ordered shaded blue. AND---what was really neat about it was the sound hole, or the absence of it---it was just a very shallow rout in the shape of a sound hole and the edge was bound....A crazy looking Rickenbacker, no doubt!!!

Yeah, that's wild! Sorta reminds me of a 381 owned by Chris Newman (The Chills). Top is carved, but the back is not and NO BINDING (!!!), Accent Vibrato, in a beautiful deep red fireglo. Never seen another like it. Nice thing about Rickenbacker, they're always open to experimentation. Ya never know what you'll find out there if you're diligently looking.
