If the bass is not set up well and / or has old worn strings on it.

Yeah...I was just wondering. Cause the 2 I played today just didnt give me what I wanted. Then again. One had the mutes up (I got no clue why they would do that).

Very well could have been the amp. I think lots of the classic Rick tone has to do with players' technique as well.
What's wrong with the mutes?

Well I didnt care for the amp too much either haha. So I figured it could of been that but I played a Stingray on itand itdidnt sound to bad and neither did the Jazz bass I played onit. So Idontknow.
I dont like the mutes. The only time I would probly use them is with apick.. But I probly wont do that much either.
Nate... Im hoping in a few weeks. Chips got some guys looking for me. So Im hoping soon.

The mutes are useless to me. I NEVER use them.. that's why I'm putting a badass on my 4001.. I dunno what I'll do with my 4003. A jazz pickup? That'll be cool.

My 4001 had a Jackson J pup in the bridge position when I got it & it sounded very lame. I put it on a P bass I had & it sounded better that way, gave it a little more bite.

What are you talking about nate? I didnt say anything about pickups dude.
So what do the badass bridges look like? I may look into that one. Cause with the bridges they have I cant really play with a pick if Iwant to mute it myself. I use my palm right on top of the saddles. Which is where the mutes would come in. But its more apain in the bum then helpful. Could just be me tho.
I played a 4003VP whatever that means... like I said earlier. It didnt have that growl... Im guessing just cause of set up. Didnt like the neck that much. But Icould get use to it if I played it alot. Infact Igot use to it b4 I left the place haha. I also played a 4001C64S. It was about the same to me.

I'd put a jazz pickup in the mute spot.. Rath does that with his 5'ers.

hmm... Never seen it. Or didnt raelly look at it I guess. If I wanted to put some different pickups in abass tho Id 1st try making my own. That or made a Jazz bass and change then pickups. If Ilike it then Id make my own body (try to at least) That or try to get one made. I dont know.

I've had idea's about basses to build, but a Rick gives me the sound I would want... so this makes it alot easier on me.
