Look at the size of this thing!!!

I guess since Rick was planning on cutting the slots all the way through, they had to put that lost wood somewhere

I think that the photography just may be doing something to exaggerate the size because it's headstock only.

There have been many variations with regard to headstock sizes over the years. Some 1960's 12-strings have much longer headstocks than others. Different models and different years can very a great deal. Most of the headstocks got enlarged after RIC stopped using Kluson tuners in the early 1980's. I think this headstock is simply one of the larger variety.

It is the larger head to accomodate the Schaller tuners but there's also some significant wide angle lens distortion going on here.

My '82 360WB has a very wide headstock with the Grovers moved in toward the centerline so that the keys almost hit the stock when you rotate them.

Relax. It only looks disproportionate to us because we're used to narrower. Could be worse:

It's as bad as a Tele 12, but completely in the other direction...

That's one way to strengthen a bad design--throw a sheet metal gravel guard on it.
