Headstock - Nameplate Lengths

It seemed to me that Mapleglo guitars have a longer truss rod cover than those of other finishes. This is probably a crazy observation, but I looked all around and it seemed true.

Oh my God! That's a really UGLY headstock on the 8-string! Kinda funny looking in a way.

I have noticed that there have been changes in the size and shape of the headstock over the years. The 70's - 90's often had smaller headstocks that to my eyes just look ugly. The early V series and CS basses have the nicer, bigger headstock, but the later CS basses and V basses have this smaller less curvy looking headstock.
I first noticed the nameplate variations, and then realized it wasn't only nameplate variations, but headstock variations.
