I need some guidance. I play bass and know zilch about Rickie guitars. My wife, bless her, has decided to learn to play the guitar and she's currently thrashing around on my old Squier Strat. I rather thought a nice FG Rickie semi would be a nice Xmas present (+jewellery, nach) and, of course, I could play it too when she wasn't around. What is the best one to go for? She's an REM fan if that helps.

Jetglo will go with more of her outfits, Fireglo clashes with some of my clothes you see.

If she's on the dainty side of the scale, get her a 325 or a 350

this is my experience with buying the wife a guitar.......My Ex is a fantastic guitar player and I got her a FG 360 when we were married and in a band together. I thought it would be a good guitar for her and she is also a big Beatles and REM fan. well let me tell you she hated it. I asked her what she wanted and she said a Black Ovation Adamus, acoustic electric. so she we got rid of the Ric. and got the Ovation it winds up the Ovation was "Her" dream guitar. find out what she likes take her to the local Guitar place see what she picks up, look through some books and see what she likes. she might like an SG or even an Ovation.
As for you thinking you can use it too... forget it the first time you play it she will think you bought it for yourself. so whatever you get don't use it its hers.

There's an exception to every rule, I guess...perhaps I'm lucky to be married to a drummer. She has her own kit, too...but she does borrow my Zildjians all the time...which is fine with me...

Let us know how it goes, Phil...if David's story is any indication and she picks an Ovation, the marriage could be in jeopardy! I think I speak for one and all here when I say I hope she picks the Ric! Best of luck, bro'...

I am a living example of how happy a wife can be when her husband buys her a Rickenbacker.... I now have 13 of them.....you see what happens here! So bear in mind that if you buy her a Ric you may eventually be buying her more than one.... and if she's like me she will be thrilled with every one of them!

I agree with the "ask her" advice. I was positive that I knew exactly which Rick my wife would want (650C was going to be my choice). She chose the 650S instead and she's VERY happy with it.

On the plus side, there ain't no bad choice in Ricks. It's almost like arguing over different colors of Ferrari's. When it's all said and done, it's still a Rickenbacker.

Harley, I've never really liked the Mondial, but I would take one in a pinch.

I'd only take a '50s Mondial, not the gold chain model.

I think I could "force" myself to take any of them (Ferrari's) or them (Rickenbackers).

I've never been a big fan of the 381, but if someone were willing to try to change my mind by giving me one for free, I'd be up for the challenge. I feel the same way about Porsches, too, if you've got an extra one laying around.

I wouldn't turn down a 356 of any color. ;^)

I'll second the 325 as a Christmas present!

Well, I asked - and she said she'd rather have:
a) a Squier Telecaster in spangly blue; and/or
b) some nice, bold contemporary jewellery.

Maybe I'll leave the axe until she can appreciate the finer points of quality guitars...
Guess it's the baubles, then!
