From online news. A Rickenbacker player of many years, Maurice Gibb, is facing a serious illness.

Maurice Gibb is critically ill in a Miami hospital after a suspected heart attack. The 53-year-old Bee Gees singer reportedly collapsed at his Florida home and had to be operated on as soon as he arrived at hospital.

His family are said to be very worried about the former alcoholic, once married to Lulu.
A spokesman told the London Evening Standard: "Maurice has undergone surgery
for an intestinal blockage. He is in a critical condition in intensive care. "We are awaiting a full medical prognosis later today but everyone is very, very worried."

Maurice is being comforted in hospital by his current wife, Yvonne, and their two children, Adam and Samantha. He has also been visited by his brotherBarry and Michael Jackson, with whom Barry had been working.

Maurice, the bass guitarist and keyboard player of the Bee Gees, is known to fans as "the funny one" of the three brothers, and distinguished by his penchant for hats.

He has been working with Barry on a new Bee Gees album in Miami, where both brothers live.

Thanks Pete.

When I was a child, my mother would frequently play 8-tracks of the Bee Gees while cleaning and cooking etc. I think I came to know the songs as well as she did.

When I was older, I was surprised, yet delighted to stumple upon Maurice on TV playing a beautiful Fireglo 4001. I had to go out and buy a Bee Gee's compilation CD.

I wish him and his family the best.

For those of you who subscribe to Bassplayer, in the April edition on page 14 there is a photo of him with a nice early 70's white with black trim 4001. Also I have a story about him. One of my former girlfriends with whom I stay in touch with moved to Miami in the mid nineties. She joined an organization in which he was a member. I knew that he played a Ric during their disco days and was sure he also used one on their good 60's stuff, so I asked her to ask him if he used Ric's. She asked him and he was surprised and said yes, I've always used Rickenbackers, how did you know that? Of course she didn't mention me (I don't know what she said) and they became good friends. (I guess he was a little standoffish up until that point, but I'm sure everybody and his brother wanted to get to know him.) Any of you who like the deep sound that a Ric bass is capable of (especially the toaster pickup basses) check out their 60's stuff especially: "I gotta get a message to you" great deep Ric sound, I've loved the bass sound in that song since I first heard it when I was a kid of about 12 of 13. They were well known way before their disco days as part of the British (Australian?)Invasion.
