How to get that typical Chris Squire sound?

I love his sound. I already got a few things to achieve his sound:

- a Ric
- a pick
- Rotosound strings

Which overdrive pedal/effect did he use? And is bi-amping an import part of his sound?

As I have read it's mainly an overdriven Marshall. And it seems as if he rarely used the bridge PU - in fact, JH has stated that that PU was essentially bypassed when they got his RM-1999 into the factory for service...

***Some of those details may be vague (it was long ago), but I'd trust John Hall when it comes to company business.***

Not sure you have to have Rotosounds per se...I would venture any good RW would do. I think CS used a scoop shape in his EQ, i.e. a mid cut.

A Rickenbacker bass, roundwound strings, low action, fretbuzz, and distortion.

Oh yeah, turn up your amp and play with a pick.

I've had good results with a SansAmp Bass Driver DI.

I just got one of those, only messed with it for about 15 minutes, and was verrrrry impressed. Great distortion.

seriously. you can have exact rig set ups and basses as your heros, but without their feel and studio engineering, it's impossible to get their true sound.
