Unless I am missing something, this pickup has no magnet. Given that, the claim that it "works fine" seems doubtful. I am wondering what the extra wire is for. The bobbin appears to be a screw-top.

You are right Marc. It is there but just hard to see in that pic. It is a little thin and it blends in with the base plate. In any event, it looks a little ******** up.

All the treble pickups I have on hand here have magnets that are 3/8" thick. That can't be the original magnet.

That is a late 60s early 70s high gain,I would suggest buying it before someone see's this post.

I have one that is in very clean condition.


Notice how thick the magnet is and notice how it is wired. The pickup on Ebay is hacked. The bobbin is the only part worth salvage. But it is not worth $100 to me.

Ted's right, the magnet on the Ebay pickup is not legit. As for the pickup proper, it looks to be a genuine 1972 (I think) high-gain.

Took a close look at my 75 4001...the magnet was clearly visible, and resembled Teds.

I would agree with Sergio, probably 72 because of the black ,dont know whats up with that magnet.

The magnet's probably from a later neck highgain which have the thinner magnet. The coil looks like my 72 so I'd say it's been chopped & changed for some reason.
Were there two different materials used to make these?

Hmm... The magnet on any neck high-gain is not longer than the pickup bobbin, which then probably makes the magnet hereunder an alnico bar magnet of Japanese origin... Right? Which is just as well though, since the magnet on the earlier 4000/4001 high-gain pickups was kinda weak. Thank you for that fine forensic analysis, Mr. Silva.

Notice the extra screw holes on the front edge. Kinda looks like it was drilled for a jazz bass pickup doesn't it?
