On page 2 of the "Rickenbacker Bass Models" article:
http://www.rickresource.com/rrp/axtbassarticle2.html
under the 4001 it says:
"(mid 70's) - Set neck design replaces neck thru design"
That seems to be saying that in the mid-70's they switched from thru-neck to set-neck. Is this a mistake, or does it mean something different?
My '80 4001 is definitely a thru-neck.

There probably referring to the 4001s this happened in the early 70s.There referring to the 4000 which is basically the same as the 4001s minus the neck pickup.

there were a few 4001 set necks they may have started out as a 4000 and then a neck pickup was added to a set neck bass at the factory ...
and some of them were converted by the owner ...

Jeff, I think you mean that some owners converted set neck 4000's to 4001's?

Oh, I just really read the previous post. It would have made sense if I tried to read it I guess. It's late, I get up early.
Also had rehearsal tonight; no drummer or singer. The other 2 guitarists and I learned 3 new tunes. Amazing the work we get done without those two around.

Wait, but there weren't any deluxe 4000 basses. Therefore, any 4000 basses given neck pickups would be 4001S models. Were there 4001 deluxe models with set necks? If so, they wouldn't have ever been 4000 models, because they have binding and inlays.

I seem to recall a thread from way back where someone had a set-neck 4001 deluxe, there may even be pics of it somewhere...I dunno for sure.
There was at least one deluxe 4000 made in 1960.
