Can anybody tell me if Ric 4001/3's ever had a two piece pickguard like the one here?

1980 to about 1984 or 1986 ... this was the original 4003 model that had truss rods that adjusted at the body ...

Was the reasoning so that for the truss rods to be adjusted, you didn't have to remove all the knobs and the switch?

I think that was the idea ...

I've e-mailed the seller for the serial number; I'm guessing that it dates from 1985.

My '85 4003 had what was probably a two-piece guard that had been hacked up to allow for the Seymour Duncans that had been installed.

That hacked-up guard is being replaced with a "standard" one piece item.

The standard guards won't fit. You can buy them a few places, one of the members here also makes them.

BTW, despite the $1,089 price tag on the website, he's advertising that blue Rick for $750 on bassgear.
