$1650!?! U.S. dollars, at that! They're not THAT rare!

Any easy fix; the old style bushings will cover the holes
one doweled and drilled.

$1650 doesn't seem outlandish considering what
4001s of that era command....

I saw that bass at the Phila show (I think).

I'm not sure, but it looked like a refin.

a 1974 4000/4001 is worth $800 at best in my book ... pretty much any 74-80 4000/4001 bass should not sell for more than $800 ... not even is they say rock out like motorhead!!!

I paid $1,200.00 for a 75 4000.

It was 100% original, which I do not see to often.

Jeff is right about the pricing however.

Very nice steps....

Gee-
I seem to recall a few '74 4001s going for over $1500.
I think that we're in the middle of a paradigm shift
as far as pricing is concerned.
We've watched 73s climb from 2500 to 3300 in the past three months.....

The tuners could be replaced with Hipshot Ultralites easily, if replugging/refinishing is not desired.

Granted, still not original, but these tuners are much better and will take a lot of weight off the headstock. Cloverleaf keys are available to retain the original look.

I always thought that tiny tuning pegs were ugly. It's really stupid, but I'd rather have a headstock-heavy bass with awesome-looking tuners than one with no neck dive and dinky tuners. That may change, especially if I end up with a Thunderbird. Neck dive from hell.

I guess I'm in good shape having paid &750 Cdn for my '76, then. It's the only one I've got with the pup cover.
The 4000's DO have significant neck dive factor, but you get used to it after a bit.
Mine is still my best playing bass. No one ever touched the rods. They still have the small daub of red paint on them.

BTW, very nice FG Dave. Do you ever use it on a gig?
I suppose there's no chance for it to get out of the house now that there's a 4002 in the harem Image

Kevin, I take 2 or 3 out to every job. I rotate them for every job and every set. They ALL get played out.

The 4000 for sure, gets a special EQ treatment when it's on the job. A very hot single pick up in that one.
