RESTON, Va. (AP) - Wilson Pickett, the soul pioneer best known for the fiery hits "Mustang Sally" and "In The Midnight Hour," died of a heart attack Thursday, according to his management company. He was 64.

Chris Tuthill of the management company Talent Source said Pickett had been suffering from health problems for the past year.

A member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Pickett - known as the "Wicked Pickett" - became a star with his soulful hits in the 1960s.

That sucks. And you know, we don't hear about important passings such as this because entertainment media is too busy letting me know that Brad Pitt knocked up Angelina Jolie.

Too true, Chris. Another legend taken from our midst. So sad.....

"Land Of 1000 Dances" is in my all time top 10 - great song!!

What a shame. Just found out from a band mate. We do Midnight Hour, Mustang Sally, and Howard's right - Land of 1000 Dances is right up there. You know, Mama did tell me not to come. He will be missed

Wilson Pickett was A-OK! He was part of my musical youth so I know I'll never forget him. Rest in Peace, Wilson. Image

This is not shaping up to be a good year for soul singers. First Lou Rawls...

Time for the other side to enjoy those voices...

"Mustang Sally" is our song of choice whenever we have musicians from other bands come up on stage with us, or whenever we are jumping up with other bands around town, because everybody knows and loves that song. His passing is sad news, especially since he was relatively young. We'll do a respectful tribute at the next show....

"...we don't hear about important passings such as this because entertainment media is too busy..."

Too true, Chris...don't know how Brian found out so quickly, but I can recommend National Public Radio as a good source for things like this that really matter. I heard their report of it at 6 am this morning...along with the news that today is Bill Maher's 50th birthday...

Dane,

Part of my real job as a consultant is to scour the news for events in our industry. This particular news was an Associated Press announcement. It was also reported by Excite.com who also do a very good job with news of this sort.

Wilson Pickett was one of my favorites on the R&B scene in the 60s. His contributions to music were enormous. He will be sadly missed in this household.

Dean - we too are planning some sort of tribute to the Wicked Pickett on Sat night. Midnight Hour and Mustang Sally will be played with gusto

Jason - sorry I couldn't join you at the show. We are holed up in northern Illinois completing the studio work for our second album (it is going quite well, happily!). Next time I see you, we'll have to jam on "Mustang Sally".

Wilson Pickett dies and Bill Maher's birthday. Two sad occasions on the same day.
