A good song, very 60s'ish. Anyone know the lead guitar riff played over the verse chords. Who played it on the record, and what guitar was used. I like the arpeggio picking and bends, nice technique.

Roger McGuinn has long been on record as saying he played that solo on Crosby's Gretsch Tennessean. Rogan's sessionography does not include Clarence on that song. To my ears, it really doesn't sound like Clarence, either... it sounds more like an extension of the solo style McGuinn earlier played on "It's No Use."

Hi Steve- 1st off, can't wait to get my hands on the janglebox! I desperately needed it 20 years ago when I was playing in the most popular '60's-'70's band in Seattle. Can't wait to hear it. You certainly may be right about that; I may have my figures crossed. I am almost sure that Clarence played on something Byrds before he was a Byrd. Your right though; the solo does sound "It's No Useish" You've got me curious now!! Christian

Sorry.guys, but by the time this tune was recorded, Roger had a Country Gent w/a treble booster in it.He was using it live in '67, along with the Rick, so at times, Both he and Croz sported Gents.Time Between and Girl With No Name feature Clarence.

Before he was formally installed as a Byrd, Clarence was all over Sweetheart of the Rodeo as well.

Christian, what band did you play with in Seattle?

I would have loved Roger to use the 12 string on that solo. Great solo style he used around this time. So unique.

I played in a band called "The Britt'ns" from 1984-92 (Please see attachments) We started off as a British Invasion band, but in 1986 we added an AMAZING keyboardest (Doing things unheard of in those early "Workstation" days, and NOT sampling sounds!!!) and ended up covering the whole deal; "96 Tears" to "Nights In White Satin" (Long version w/poetry) "If I Needed Someone" to "Kashmire". "Let's Live For Today" to "Green Eyed Lady". I played my '67 Ricky 366/12 (360 pickguard), '76 Gibson Firebird, late '80's Epiphone Casino, Vox Mark Vl "Toilet Seat" (Teardrop) Giannini Craviola 12 String, A Rhada Krishna Sharma Indian Sitar on "Norwegian Wood" & "Paint It Black" (See attach.), a Blue Lyon Dulcimer on "Lady Jane", an RKS Tamboura on "Across The Universe", a Suzuki Mandolin on "Going To Cailifornia", etc. In 1986, I finally got to meet Roger at "The Backstage" in Seattle, and he signed my 366/12. Was SUCH A THRILL to have at least a little "One on one" time with him; made sure I shook his hand twice! I remember what went through my head at the moment I shook his hand; the whole McGuinn/Crosby/Lennon/Harrison/Peter Fonda "She Said" thing!! Sadly, this guitar (Along with everything else was lost in a house fire 3 years ago) The good news is "I'm Shopping Again", and a fellow answered my post looking for a Carl Wilson, and informed me he has one of the rare 360/12V66 made for Japan. It looks gorgeous, and will most likely make the buy. A very well known band around here, "The Beatniks" told us they got their name from us (They sell the sizzle, we sold the steak) Of course, the general populace (Especially in this country) prefers the sizzle!! In many ways, The Britt'ns was the worst band I was ever in; it was a combination of brilliance, uniqueness, and some very bad musicians, most of which could not sing! I'm not sure how we pulled it off, (Vocals on "Time Of The Season", etc!!) especially at the time, long before jangleboxes and such! I remember "'80's Roosters" would come out to laugh at us (You know, spiked hair, muscle shirts, but no muscles-pork links for arms!) and ended up becoming 5 year long fans. It was freaky. Can't tell you how excited I am about your "New Toy", and can hardly wait to get my hands on one. Kind of a sweetener to buffer the loss of my 366/12. I'm also so pleased to see Brian Jones (My favourite musician) recognised here at the Rick Resource. The Byrds are, without question, my favourite band in the universe, and was tickled silly to see a Byrds category here in the forum! Thanks Steve and guys, for making me feel welcome! Here's a better shot of my deceased 366/12, April '67 serial GD1969 (360 pickguard) This is after Roger signed it, and was on cloud nine (For some reason, it didn't occur to me to have him sign the pickguard, and he carefully put his autograph into the soundhole on the unfinished wood! I saw the original Byrds play "Have You Seen Her Face" live on the 'Tonight Show' towards the end of 1967. Yes it was McGuinn who played the intro riff and solo but as I recall it was played on his 50's Blonde Telecaster! I saw him play this very same guitar in person in Philly/October 1968 on "King Apathy III" & "Bad Night At The Whisky". Photo available if I can find a scanner...

Don, you may be right about the Gretsch, it's been 39 years and I may have been hallucinating... However, here's the Tele photo, Philly/October 1968:
