Three things jump right out at me- the truss rod cover, the upper pickguard, and the case are decidedly NOT original.

Yep, and the body and neck is probably from 1960, not 1958.

Music Ground. They are a killer.

The shape of the headstock, the bridge, the way the ramp is routed (they were almost ALL that way in '60)...

And, lastly, its Fireglo.

Good points all. I don't know these early ones nearly as well as you do; these things need to be pointed out to me. Then I go, "ah ha! You're right."

To be fair to Music Ground, I e-mailed him and he e-mailed the serial # back (2V061). He also dated the pots to 1960 and he said he is revising the listing.

Why does everybody with a Capri think it's from 1958? I'll date this one to early '60 due to the yellowed switch tip, which changed to black later in the year.

I'd get close up pics of ALL parts- the tailpiece is inconsistent with the serial number, the truss cover is a reissue ("Made in USA"), the upper guard is a different color than the lower guard, and the case is not correct for this vintage.

Pickups, bridge, bridge cover, and knobs could be easily identified as original or not with closeup photos.

Looks nice though.

Tony's right, not to knock it but this guitar is the sum of it's parts I'm afraid, since the sn# pretty much makes it a 335, plus all of the changed out stuff...

The SN does not identify it as a 335, John. It merely says that it's a two-pickup with vibrato. My '60 365 is 2V089.

Did 335s have the two-level pickguards in '60? I thought they were single-level...

On this one, the tailpiece, pickups and bridge all look too new to be original.

Surely he means serial number combined with the rest of the guitar. The point being, the tailpiece is wrong.

Ricks had two-tier guards as early as '58. Only the earliest had single guards- before things were really finalized.

Two level guards by '59. Maybe even late '58. I, too, doubt if the tailpiece is original. Easy to find out with a pic.

I've seen pics of one and two level pickguards from that year.I don't think they were very consistant with the pickguards then.I like the fireglow.You can see where the name fireglow came from.

Paul, the guitar in the auction pics is a full-scale Rickenbacker Capri with standard features, and by the '2V' jackplate should have been equipped with a vibrato, i.e. a 335....I agree by the sn# alone you can only make a broad assumption, but obviously not in this case..much more to go by here.

Absolutely. This looks like an old guitar that has been fitted with newer parts.

I love these oldies--isn't this fun?

But--what's it worth? Well, the body/neck's original, as is the lower guard, and maybe the electrics, but the rest--well, I doubt it now. So any guesses?
