Ok , So if you had your choice between the two Wich would you all Take ? an 81 fireglo 4001 S or an 86 Ruby glo 4003 ? They are both in about equal condition . The 4001 has a nice thin neck the ruby has a freak neck almost like a jazz bass.Do you all feel there is a large price difference or about Equal ?

I've been having major GAS for an S lately, so I'd go with the 4001. I'd feel the price should be comparable. One is an unusual model & the other is an unusual color.

I'd say the Ruby is worth more due to the rarity of the finish.

That's a tough one. I think it all comes back to which one you like better. The '86 has the better truss rods, better tuners, and the 7 screw tailpiece that won't lift. The S is, well...an S! Both cool basses.

Jeff, to me, but only me, that would be a no-brainer. I would go for the '81 S. That is because I love FG's, skunk stripes and the whole 'S'mojo. YMMV.

I'm with you on this one Bob. The S would be my choice.

I'd go with the 4003 if she is going to have to earn a living. If semi retired is her fate, the 4001s wins.

****, changed my mind, get both. Settled, now wasen't that easy?

(This is the type of thinking that keeps me single even though I'm pretty) pretty ugly

Since the 4001 is merely an S and the 4003 is the full, proper, complete Rickenbacker bass as Zeus intended them to be, with shark fin inlays and ultra-biutchin' Rick-O-Sound the choice is clear, methinks.

Looking at your comments in your post about the necks and your username, its my opinion you have answered your own question.
