When I was eighteen,I bought my first rick, a 4001jg, i recall in the store that they had a few fg's and a very odd purple burst...a 4001 but with a fg style burst but done in purple..just wondering if I maybe should have worn a helmet during hockey practice...or does this finish sound familiar to anyone...the year would have been 1981.

It would have to be a refinished one, or possibly a special order when RIC was doing that sort of thing. There's a "purpleburst" guitar on Mike Parks site, special made for somebody Hudson. That's the only one I've seen.

If anybody can document this purple bass, I need it for the book.

Mark Hudson had a purple 4005 (among other purple Ricks). It was done up like FG but purple. JH told the story here a while ago. Apparently the purple was the color of a scarf owned by Mark's mother.

My understanding is that there is a also a 360, 370 and a 4005 made for Mark Hudson in the Purpleburst finish. If anyone has photos of the 4005, I would LOVE to see it.

All custom made from Ric back when they had a custom shop.

... the purple burst once was a frequent finish of some excellent Japanese copies in the late 70ies.

Simply fabulous!

Now I know what colour my 72 4001 will be...

In all, I think it was the 4005, 350, 370 OS and the 620.

There's a guy here who got a 71 or 72 4001 from Ric that he had finished in greenburst from the factory. I've told him that if he EVER decides to sell it, I'm buying. I'll find the money somehow...

I don't think the Hudson Purplebursts should be categorized as being from RIC's "Custom Shop" (which doesn't exist anyways). John Hall has stated that the purplebursts were done for Mark Hudson because he is a personal friend.

There was a time when you could order up a Rick just about any way you wanted it. There is rumored to be a short scale 4001 out there and a 4002 in white. I am guessing that there are a lot of odd fish yet to be discovered.

Agreed Ted, but I don't think RIC would descibe themselves as ever having a "Custom Shop". Finding those oddities and delving into their history is one of interesting aspects of RIC.

Here are two shots of the aforementioned Purpleburst guitar. Unfortunately, they are quite small due to the posting limitations here, and thus loaded with JPEG compression artifacts:

I agree Steve, there was never truly a custom shop.
