I saw it when I could still hit the BIN, but I thought, for $400-$500 more I can (hopefully) find a Mapleglo v63, that is neck-thru, has a horseshoe pickup, and most important, a strong neck and modern truss rods.

I could have BIN'ed it too, but the set neck put me off.

I agree with all Ilan says...

why in the world would anybody pay $1400 for a 74 4001?? that makes no sense ...

you can get a brand new 4003 for $1100 ...

Jeff,
Some people like older basses for the vintage vibe. Some people like the S model. One cannot order a 74 4001s from the factory any more, even if you offered them $1400. To me, it isn't a bad deal.

And no, I didn't buy the bass in question.

And why is the neck pickup on that 4001s (?) so conspicuously misaligned? Did it leave the factory that way? Or are we looking at a modded 4000?

And, it all boils down to we as individuals. We are all different, with different likes and dislikes. If everybody lived in a world where we all wanted 5 string 2030's, it would be quite boring, I would think. Luckily we do not, and we can buy whatever we chose to, whether it be a 2030, a 60's 4001, a split-pg 4003 or a brand new 4003FL in AFG. The choices are ours to make, and those choices add lots of variety, and that variety is the spice of life.

Ok, I'm done---time for dinner!

I wouldn't pay that much for one. Nowhere near.

I agree with Jeff, I'd rather buy a new 4003 for $1100 than that bass for $1399. It's probably modded, the pickup does seem misaligned as Sergio has pointed out.

I can see paying a high price for a pre-74 collectable 4001 ... but a 74 thru 80 4001 is not rare ... they made 1000s of them ... to me that is an $800 bass ... I like old 70s 4001 basses that is a good 4 string rock and roll bass ... I used to gig with a 73 and a 74 until I switched to 5 string basses and got hooked on the modern 4003 basses ...
