Has anybody put 4004 pickups in a 4001/3?

yep ... I was disappointed because I left the 250k ohm pot in there as well ... if you do it you will need a 500k ohm pot ... a 4001/4003 come wired with a 250k ohm vulme pot and a 500k ohm tone pot ... single coil pickups should have 250k ohm volume pots and humbuckers should have 500k ohm volume pots

go for it ... try it ... you might like it ...

It will soon be living with Chris Pappas! As much as I love it, I have some major spending coming up and this is the only one I could not easily part with (for now), but part with I must.

I was thinking if I ever got a 3rd ric I would go for a second modern 4003 and put in 4004 humbuckers just to give me variety in tone. Many rics are cool, but I would like to have a reason to play one over the other that goes beyond color. That way I would have one vintage sounding ric with a toaster, one modern single coil, and one modern humbucker.

I was thinking about getting a 4004 as my 3rd ric... but I like the look of the 4003.

Jeff, what's it sound like, compared to the 'buckers. I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on the Midnight Blue 4004L POR has and I'm going to be interested in toasters.

The toasters give it more of the classic RIC sound, not as dark sounding as the HB-1s. With a bit of the neck pickup rolled off (only available to those with the VVT control setup, or at least those with individual volume controls for the pickups) you can get a nice burpy Jacoesque sound, making the bass more sonically versatile. The gain is lower but that is not a real issue.

for a while I had a 4004L with a neck toaster and a bridge hb1 and a vvt control setup ... it sounded good but it lost some humbucking capability ...

I always wondered: what would happen if you had a 4004L and you put a 4003 neck hi-gain into the bridge position on the 4004, and then a toaster into the neck position. Wouldn't that pickup combo sound very 4003-esque?

I think the slugs, ( polepieces ), on a High gain would cause clearance problems with the strings.
