Toaster Pickup Adjustment...1966 360/12
I was reading about this adjustment and the need to raise the bridge pup first to slightly below the strings and then adjust the neck pup to a height that balances volume with the bridge pup. Is this right?
There's only one problem...the edge of my pick guard rests on the flanges of the covers. That means that I either have to trim the pick guard (I won't do this), remove the covers, or remove the pick guard and re-attach after the pups are adjusted (assuming that the flanges still don't interfere).
So...do I really need to worry about adjusting to optimal height or was there a modification from the early models that allowed for the adjustment. I'd be interested in knowing how others have handled this. Hopefully, it's just another one of my completely novice questions and there's a simple answer...Thanks...JJ

JJ...I just checked my 360 with toasters and my pickguard (and guitar)is the same as John Williams 360.
Go here http://www.homestead.com/aurs/60365.html
There is a slight difference in that on my 360, the pickguard does not partially cover the bridge pup as on John's however it does cover the neck pup but not as much as on John's 360. Also, the arc on my upper pickguard adjacent to the switch has an irregular cut...ie. a series of short, straight lines.
The string height on my 360 is 1/8" above both pups. The bottom of the bridge is 5/16 on both sides above the surface of the top.
These measurements should get you in the ballpark.
FYI, the spacing between pups on these two guitars may be different as well...yours may not match either of these. My pups are spaced 3 1/2".

Dave...nice pics...thanks for the feedback. It would have been nice to see a side view to get an idea of the clearance, if any, between the flange and the pickguard. Nevertheless, upon further review, it seems that one could increase that clearance by adding another rubber grommet or 2 on each of the three screws to raise the pickguard height so that it could accommodate raising the pup if needed. I'll consider that when I go through that part of the setup.
FYI my neck pup gap is 3/8" and the bridge pup gap is 5/32"...considerably more than yours. The distance between the pups is 3 3/8" so that's about the same.

JJ...the bottom of the neck pup is 1/8 above the top....the bottom of the lower p/g is flush with the bottom of this pup. The bottom of the upper p/g is 5/32 above the top of the pup flange.
The p/g does not overlap the bridge pup at all.
The p/g overlaps the neck pup about 1/4.
If you can understand this you are doing pretty good!!

Dave...Believe it or not, after reading it 3 times I think I got it. The question is, how neceessary has it been to adjust the heights and how have people with my design accomplished this. I still think the extra grommets(spacers) are the way to go. Just looking for confirmation or other approaches...JJ
JJ...The width of my upper p/g is 3 1/2 measured across the part that is in between the pups.
Looking more closely than I ever have at my p/g, I now notice that the part that overlaps the neck pup is not cut square. If it had been cut square, there would have been no overlap. There is no overlap at all on my bridge pup due to the pup being mounted very close to the bridge.
My feeling about your guitar is that you should dissamble it, clean it, have it setup by someone who has verifiable RIC luthier skills and just play it....warts and all as your brother would have wanted.
Also, my guitar is 8 years older than yours so dimensions could have changed.
