What is your opinion on hanging guitars? I love looking at my guitars and I don't want to keep them in cases or on stands where they are likely to be damaged. Is there any long term damage to worry about, ie: neck warpage? I posted the question to Ric, their official answer was that they do not recommend hanging guitars, they should be kept in their case.

I have no problem with hanging guitars ..........but!


the hangers that are on the market (for the most part) are not finish friendly.

They also do not hold all guitars equally .
Telecasters fall off of almost every hanger .
The reason (and this may not be the real reason ,just my opinion) that the factory says no to handing is to not have the headache of dealing with guitars/basses that owners feel should be fixed for free or for a price.It just adds to an already stressed work situation in the factory.In other words ...don't and then no one has to worry about the consequences.

I Made a rack with hangers that had leather (undyed) for the necks to rest on .These never reacted to paint and I never had a single guitar fall off .
I HATE stands...the tube type that have surgical tubing are the worst .They fall over,eat the paints leave marks where they touch the instruments,and cause more broken headstocks that I care to know about .

I don't hand my guitars myself (in my house) because I have kids and grandkids .No thanks ! I want my guitars handled by me and in the case they are the safest.

I am with you Mark. I find instruments safest in the case, provided the cases themselves are in a safe environment. Forty percent relative humidity and not against an outside wall where temperature extremes are most likely. They don't look quite so cool but they are protected from others who have no idea how to handle them and can't resist trying to take them down.

Not to mention the "outside" temptation if they happen to be visible through a window.

Thanks for all of your input. My main concern is long term damage not prying hands or eyes. I've had 4 Ricks hanging on "OFF the Wall" hangers for about 6 months already. I was very concerned about finish damage as Rick warns against using any stand whose rubber or vinyl parts may contain chlorine. I called "Off the Wall" and spoke to the owner about my concern. He went to the chemists who developed the coating and called me back, which in itself was a great response from a company. He said that although chlorine is used in the manufacturing process, during curing it is all consumed. He is a Rick user and guaranteed his product. As I said, I've got 4 guitars hanging on them without any marks or 'burns' on the finish. I would definitely recommend the product. Thanks again for your help.

In cases of a capitol offense ,hanging is legal in only certain cases and this is in regards to Western motif and many evil instruments that need a good old fashioned hanging .
