Birthday question.....

My wife has decided to get me a bass for my birthday. I now exclusively play one of Jeff Rath's old 4003/s5. My question is whether to buy a new 4 string Ric or pick up a 5 stringer. I prefer 5 strings but a new 5 string Ric ain't gonna happen. What brands of 5 stringers do you guys like or should I just lose the B and go with a Ric 4 stringer? She doesn't understand why I just don't go to Guitar Center and buy a bass........

Now come on John... as bass is a bass, any old thing should do. ;P

Hi John, I think if you have the fiver finesse, I would stick with another five. I found as I jumped back and forth, I did neither very well. At least in my situation, trying to play, sing, run the PA, dodge flying fruits and vegetables, with limited ability.
If your in the recording environment, then the different instrument may be an asset. I'm much more brave in the quiet surroundings of the studio. There I get to think about and look at what I'm playing. Doesn't help much, but there are fewer people laughing as I suffer.

Simple, just contact Jeff again.

Get a Zon, the necks are real nice and thin, like an early Rick. Plus the neck is not too wide, so there is no strain playing one. I have had three Zons and all the necks are very consistent in feel.

Absolutely, Lakland. Skylines are the nest low-priced 5 strings available. USA models are better, but three-four times the price

What do you think of a Warwick Dolphin? I tried one and love the sound.

BTW, I did contact Jeff and if I can find a new 4003 Jetglo somewhere I'll do the 425 conversion.

4004 better than a 4003? That works for me....

4004L with Jeff's 4-2-5 conversion.
I've played some Laklands at various guitar stores. They feel lovely, but I'm not a fan of the looks, and for some reason I didn't like the sound of them at all (usually I love Bartolini electronics).
You might want to look into a nice Tobias 5-string, or, actually, I just thought of it: You need a Pedulla Rapture J2 5-string. AMAZING BASS. If I had one, I'd never sell it for ANYTHING.
