Forgive me if this topic has already been discussed recently but I am curious if anyone knows who played piano on such great songs as "This Empty Place"? Thanks in advance

It is probably The Searchers' PYE record producer, Tony Hatch.

I would be almost certain as Tim says that it is Tony Hatch, in fact the piano sound is in someways similiar to the piano sound on some Petula Calrk records, he of course produced her as well.

Tony Hatch had a nice touch to be sure. His work, although very successful with singers such as Petulla Clark was, in my view, perhaps too mellow for the Searchers. Yes they did have a hit with "Sugar and Spice" but in the balance Hatch's soft approach may have sold the group short in the days of intense guitar jangle. The Searchers were conservative enough and Hatch may have held them back a bit.

Recent information obtained from Frank Allen has revealed that there was a piano player in addition to Tony Hatch that was involved in those recordings that used a piano in the early days. We now begin the search for his name.
