Very cool looking 4001:

The seller claims that it can handle roundwounds, but the price seems pretty steep! Love that finish, though...

I'm looking very hard at a Ric bass and I'm a little confused. While it's clear that 4001s have 1 truss rod and 4003s have 2, if I plan to play with roundwound strings should I stick only to looking at 4003s? I know I've read that *some* 4001s handle roundwounds OK, why is that if some other don't? THANK YOU THANK YOU for your 2 cents (or pence).

Lee, 4001's are NOT designed for roundwounds. I have three 4001's and have roundwounds on all three. Two of them have had no problems at all. One I'm working on some issues, but I don't think it's because of roundwounds. Some people have had the fretboard pop off. If you put rounds on a 4001 you are taking a chance. BTW 4001 & 4003 BOTH have 2 truss rods.

Every single 4001 that I owned was strung with roundwounds and held up fine ...

AH, thanks. I didn't realise that both had 2, my mistake. I guess I'll keep looking for 4003 then, because I'd h-a-t-e to plunk down alot of money and possibly harm it, that'd just be my luck, ha.

4001s were not designed for early 1970's round wounds. Strings today are MUCH better made. In fact, the average round has less pull than the average flat.

ah ha! So THAT must account for why so many folks are able to string up their 4001s with roundwounds without trouble... well, that and all that all clean livin'.

Have had Fender nickelrounds .105's on my '75since 9/1994. Just switched to Thomastik-Infeld Power Bass rounds. Much lighter tension string, though the bass held up fine with the Fender strings.
