So I'm watching VH1 Classic and XTC Mayor of Simpleton is on. Is Moulding playing a Hondo Ric knock-off bass in that video? It's hard to tell.

I remember that video from way back when I was in college. It was a mapleglo one with no binding, right? Wow, that one really stuck with me. Great bassline, too, as I remember. I can't help you with identifying the bass, as I haven't seen it in at least 15 years, but you've got me hankering for that song. What album is it on?

Colin Moulding is a VERY under-rated player. Great basslines and great tone! If I was half as good, I'd be happy.

Wow, what a great bassline. I remember it like it was yesterday; I'll have to go find Oranges and Lemons (thanks Lindsay).

Dean, don't stop at that one; try Black Sea, Skylarking and Nonesuch also. As Steve said, great basslines but also great lyrics and songwriting.

One of the most under rated bands ever! Check out English Settlement for dollops of Dave Gregory and his 360/12.

"Fly On The Wall" - a great song, as each part of that song boasts a fine melody.

Check out Dave's web site. Some great guitars. And the 1993 isn't for sale - I've already asked!!

Damn you Andy Partridge! Damn you for not going on tour since 1980!

I remember Oranges and Lemons as their "come back" record - it was hyped pretty hard. XTC were on the cover of Rolling Stone - I remember reading it at ORD waiting for my flight to take me back home to LA and "Mayor of Simpleton" was on MTV a fair amount for a short time.

They actually appeared on Letterman to promote O&L: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yciNDR7E8iE&search=xtc
Too bad the interview segment isn't included in the clip. The song, "King For A Day" is in Muzak rotation in a mall around here somewhere, which means that I am officially Old.

Fano Guitars is still accepting orders for these:

I met Andy in at the Virgin records store in San Francisco on his and Colin's limited in-store appearance tour in 1998/1999. I brought my (as I described it to Andy) "original 'Skylarking' with 'Mermaid Smiled'" vinyl album. He signed it and put some giant army boots on the girl figure on the cover. Very funny.

If anyone else had done that it would be considered ruined but since it was Andy, it's art.
