I saw that one too. The truely trajic thing will be the extra hole or two left uncovered when the next owner puts on the correct guard. There's a 3000 bass on eBay with a wooden guard too. What is it with Ricks and wooden pick guards. Oh the humanity!

Aesthetic matter is really a subjective thing.
I personnaly hate that wooden pickguard's look, but like Dane said, it's the extra holes that demolish such a devine instrument.

Hm... Modifying thusly a vintage Rick is no misdemeanor. That 4001 must be pretty valuable. It is from the early '70s: Checkered binding, full width fretboard markers, and Burgundyglo to boot... Someone ought to make the seller swallow that idiotic pickguard and produce the original one ASAP. Just my opinion.

well it's certainly ugly(the pickguard, that is)maybe if they conformed to the original shape of the 4001 pkgrd and did'nt have to make extra holes it would'nt be that hideous...OTOH,it's seems to be going for a cheap price, and that pickguard should keep it that way(being non-original and VERY ugly)..and theres nothing that can't be fixed...the question now is...who here is going to rescue it??..

I think that pickguard is the prototype for the new Toffeeglo finish. Yes, that extra hole is a bummer, not to mention any finish discoloration or pitting that may have occured with that shape on it.

I think it needs a couple of humbuckers and a bad *** bridge, and a big wood thumb rest ...

The pickguard that came on my 77 beats that one by a mile. Mirrored and it turned yellow and 1/4 peeled off from the inside.

The seller was kind enough to give me the serial number: LK1311.
So the poor girl was born in November 1972.
