Hey all I ordered a pickup cover for my recently acquired 85 4003. But it is too big!

I found this out after painting it black and everything. Anyone know of a fix or maybe where I could find on that would fit? Thanks for any help.

Do you mean that it sticks up too high, or what? I think there is only one pickup cover for 4003's and they all seem to fit every instrument.

The whole cover was too large to even fit through the bridge pickup opening. I will measure them both with a ruler and let you guys know the difference. But I tried really hard and it is just too big to fit.

Is yours a faker, perhaps? Did you order it from RIC or another source?

Do you guys just take the pickup off and the the cover slides right through or is there a special trick? I tried taking the surround apart and putting the cover through the hole the pickup sticks out of and it just got kind of stuck and felt like I would bend the surround if I kept trying. Maybe I am doing it wrong? I don't know.

I believe it goes between the pickup and the springs. You need to remove the surround.

Yeah that is what I did no dice. Maybe I will just try to shave some off of the cover see if it will fit. It is just a hair to big. I mean literally a hair. Anyone ever had anything powder coated? The tuners are a little jacked in their age so I though maybe I could take it locally and get the pickup cover and tuners powder coated in one shot. Not sure if anyone would do such a small job though.

BT powdercoat;
it would be helpful if you could photograph the cover alongside the p'up (out of the g'tar).

I've not seen this problem before. Just to be sure, you are installing it according to the bass pickups diagram at the Rickenbacker site:
http://www.rickenbacker.com/pdfs/bpickups.pdf
I am aware of variations in pickup cover height, but not width.

"Jeff jeez I hope not"
I mean the cover, not the bass! Is the cover an original RIC part, or aftermarket?
