I could be mistaken, but it sound like a 4001 is in play on Gang of Four's "Entertainment". I think Dave Allen plays a Stingray nowadays, but man did he get some tone way back then!!

P-bass & tiny amps, I think I read somewhere.
One of my all-time faves. I have owned at least 4 copies of this album on various media. Wore out the LP when I was younger.

I recall reading about the tiny amps in the booklet that came with their latest remastered 'Entertainment' CD. I've been a fan since it came out (1979?). Played that record to death during my college years (1979-1983). Loved that noisy brittle guitar sound.

P-Bass, really, wow! I guess my ears deceived me! That was one of the reasons I just got a 4001, I guess the jokes on me, but I'm able to cop the sound (but not the skill) pretty well. I wonder what kind of tiny amps they were, that's pretty cool.
Yeah, I was also fooled with the guitar sound, I'd NEVER have guessed it was a strat (not my favorite!), ha.

When I saw them recently & the stage was set up with a couple of Strats, I was like "That can't be right". Also, check this photo.
That's no strat.

I saw them on the Hard tour, but with Sara Lee in place of Dave Allen (FWIW she played a P Bass). Andy Gill played the guitar shown above, if I remember correctly, but has said since that he uses a Strat; he was in Guitar Player in December:

The pictures I've seen of it show a Strat Plus Ultra (?) with Lace sensors and a Lace humbucker in the bridge position.

I found some pics at
www.jennylens.net from 2 shows in 1979. In one Andy uses the above (Yamaha SG?) and Dave appears to be using a p-bass. In the other Andy is using a strat (with something done to the pickups) and Dave is definitely usng a p-bass. When I saw them last year Andy was using a brand-new looking strat with Lace Sensors and Dave was using a MusicMan with 'FACT' written on it.

Well, I played in alternative band in the early 80's and we covered a Gang of Four song ( I think it was Damaged Goods) that I played on my 4001. Does that count?

Good enough for me! I know that MILLIONS of bassists choose the P-Bass (some with good reason even!), but I just couldn't go there. I knew my first real bass had to clank.
