Rounded Corners/Sharp Corners On Treble PU Surround

In the early 70s, apparently RIC would sometimes skip the operation of rounding off the corners of the 4001 treble pickup mounting ring. Was this deliberate? Perhaps an attempt to give 4001 basses a... sharper look?

Sérgio, I've never seen the surrounds with sharp corners. Have you some pics for us?

Well, yes.

This one's from 1973. I once owned a December '72 4001 with the same feature.

Interesting... surely I've seen those before and didn't notice the corners. Have you tried emailing Mr. Hall with that question?

I like the rounded corners better.

Looks like the surround from a "High-Gain" pickup.

Was it possibly changed when the pickup was changed?

Maybe it is an aftermarket surround?

My 1970 21 fret 4001 has a (first version) high-gain in the treble position and the mounting ring therefor has rounded corners.
An aftermarket surround? I don't think so. I've seen a couple of 4001s with these 'unfinished' surrounds on the Web, and I once owned a late '72 4001 with just such a surround.
