Just bought a M-8E off eBay...

Post by gregabate »

So in an interest to experiment and learn more about tube amps I bought a Rick M-8E, which I am told was produced in the late 1950's. I paid $180 for it shipped (is that a good deal? It seemed so to me). The tone and distortion are both great and what I expected. However, there is this annoying buzzing and humming noise that can be heard at almost all volume levels. It is audible at level 2, worse at 5, and horrible at full blast. There is a staticy buzz and a high pitched humming layered together. I've been told to have it fit with a modern three prong plug or maybe replace the capacitors. Would either of these things help? Does this just come with the vintage/tube amp territory? I know little to nothing about tube amps and any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Wqelcome Greg! An amp that old most certainly needs maintenance, as in filter caps and many other parts needing to be replaced, which is a perfectly normal thing to have done.

A great deal Greg. Time for servicing, after which it should be almost as good as new. Why not post your questions on Charlie's Tube Tech Forum where the amplifier enthusiasts can see it.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm
