No Luck Posting Photos

I've shot my new 330 12 and tried to post them here. Re-sized to 500X375 and 72 DPI, but the photo is 193.13 kb, and I keep getting an error message that the maximum is 36 kb. When I try to reduce the photo quality to meet 36 kb, the photos are pathetic, hardly recognizable. What am I doing wrong?

I wish I knew as well. I had one photo reduce well, but another two badly. Still another won't reduce at all. This is all on HP Photo Printing. Help!

I take mine in medium resolution and export them from the camera in JPG format @ 500 x 375 using the Canon software that came with the camera. That puts them at around 72k.
I then load them up in MS Paint and simply save them - no adjustments necessary and they come out at somewhere between 20k and 30k. The resulting picture isn't brilliant by any means but it's certainly viewable. And the strings don't have that wretched 'stripey' look.
Hope this is of some help, guys.

You need to use Photoshop to optimize the photo.
There's also a 500px size limit.
Although, I must admit, I hate the image requirements here. Most forums just have you link to an offline image, and put it between two tags. For some reason, we're stuck back in the stone age here. People are past 28k modems!

Jere, are you using a Macintosh? If so, what software are you using?

Jere, e-mail me one of your pictures and let me see what I can do.

OK, I'll volunteer, too. JW, send me your huddled photos yearning to be posted.

I use Photoshop, too. Just adjust the slider when you save a small copy of the pic. It gives you the size in kb at the bottom. It's not completely accurate, but if you get it around 34 or 35kb & under 500 X 500 you should be fine.

You can do that too, Nick. Check out the 'Coding' topic in the 'Help' section.
I think your 'stone age' comment is unfair given that you may not have fully explored the options available to you. Lots of members use off-line storage such as Photobucket and post links to the photos.
I think the size limitations are there simply to keep disk usage on the server down to a reasonable level.

Thanks to all who have chimed in. I've tried several options, none of which worked. We have been trying to use "Irfanview," which appears to be a waste of time. I suppose in time I will purchase Photoshop.

Purchase it? Pffft.
And the alternative to 'purchase' is what?

I just use Microsoft paint. It comes with Windows (under programs/accessories/paint). Under the image tab, click on stretch/skew. You can then reduce the image file by changing the horizontal and vertical size.

Anyone use PhotoStudio on a Mac? Not having any luck posting pictures- The file sizes end up being way too large (150kb). I keep trying to shrink the image - and it gets to be the size of a pin.
Thinking about picking up the computer and throwing it out the window...

That's usually a Windows based comment!
