I have a 1975 Model 4001 in a Mapleglo finish. If you examine the binding closely you will see that it is white and black. I am wondering whether this was a special edition feature as it quite usual. I have never seen a binding like this before. Would you please comment on this binding and also what you consider the value of this instrument to be?
thanx valentina

This was a semi standard item in that time frame.
The factory was shooting white on the basses and it was felt that the black was a good contrast.
The neck was white binding still as they had not yet designated a difference .this was all new and not long into the black binding, came the call for all binding to be black for the white basses.
Some of these basses had such nice wood that they were graded A plus and went natural/mapleglo.this is what you have.
A direct disendant of this white bass with the black binding is the 4002.
for more on this I turn you over to Richard Smith's book on page 211 and a color photo on page 117.
your black guard was also from this evolution process ...about 10 years later came the black powder coated hardware.I'm sure there will be more to come on this variation from white binding and white guard.
